In August, Colchester's theory test centre is to close.
The centre in North station Road will shut its doors on August 31, the Driving Standards Agency announced.
To sit their theory tests, Learners now face a 35 mile round trip to Ipswich .
The centre has the capacity to host 30,000 tests a year, but last year fewer than 9,000 learners sat theory tests there.
It is one of dozens of centres across the UK to be axed.
Chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), Rosemary Thew, said: "DSA relies for income on the fees we receive from our customers so we have a duty to spend that money responsibly while maintaining a good level of service.
"As the theory test centres in Colchester and Ipswich both have spare capacity it is not cost effective to keep both of them running."
