Recently, a UK survey has pointed the common causes for getting distracted behind the wheel - mobile phones, music, cosmetics, snacks and drinks.

Eight in 10 motorists put lives at risk by getting distracted behind the wheel, the researchers have found.

According to the survey for price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, an alarming 82 percent of drivers confessed to having been badly distracted at some stage.

The single biggest cause is music and 61 percent admit that they get distracted while changing CDs, music on their iPod or stations on the radio.

While half say snacks and drinks are to blame and 23 percent admit making or taking calls on a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

36 percent among the under-35 age group, confessed to sending texts at the wheel - and two per cent said they looked at Facebook while driving.

Five percent admitted applying perfume or make-up in the mirror and 15 percent said they did not wear a seatbelt.

Car insurance expert of moneysupermarket.com, Peter Harrison said: "Taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, could lead to severe or even fatal consequences."

"Careless drivers are a menace on the roads and are a danger to both themselves and others. It really isn't worth taking the risk," he added.
