A driving instructor from Otley has been named as one of the stewards at the upcoming Melbourne grand prix in what stands as his first appointment for an F1 race.
Steve Stringwell, who is known as Judge Dredd in motorsport and racing circles, says he is looking forward to the challenge. He will act alongside former championship driver Johnny Herbert.
Stringwell commented "This is a tremendous honour to be invited to be a steward and a real challenge.
"As a steward you have to look objectively at all the evidence before you and make a decision. There is a mass of video evidence and technical data but we have to get our decisions right.
"There is no room for error. Once a driver receives a ten-second drive-through penalty, his chances of winning are as good as over. You have to be precise and fair in your decision-making."
