A recent study has revealed that the vast majority of drivers fear for their safety when they are behind the wheel. However its not themselves they worry about, but rather believe that other drivers pose the highest level of danger to them.
The Driving Force driving school in Coventry was shocked to hear the results of the research carried out by Brake and Direct Line, which revealed that 69% of drivers worry about being killed when driving, despite only 1% thinking they perform worse than average when it comes to safe driving.
And a whopping 98 per cent think they are safer than, or as safe as, the average driver.
The research seems to indicate that most drivers vastly overestimate their own abilities behind the wheel, despite the large proportion of drivers who speed, drink drive or drive tired.
Brake's campaigns director Julie Townsend commented "Being over-confident, and believing you can get away with risk-taking, is a really dangerous attitude behind the wheel. If you drive, you have a responsibility to yourself and others to stay within the law.
"That's why we're calling on drivers to make our ‘Pledge to Drive Safely'. It's time everyone took it upon themselves to play their part in making our roads safer, instead of just pointing the finger at others."
