Driving school of firefighter in demand

To help stop unnecessary deaths after witnessing young drivers die on the roads, a distraught firefighter started his own driving school.

Steve Lintott, a West Sussex firefighter, started the business on his own.

But it is now so successful that he is now employing nine other instructors for the school, which operates in East Grinstead.

Back in 2004, a horrific accident near Horsham, where a young girl had crashed after recently passing her test, stuck with him for years.

Three days before Christmas she was rushed to hospital, but doctors took the decision to switch off her life support machine.

Steve was the last person to speak to the girl alive and the tragedy was still at the forefront of his mind when he set up his business in 2008.

The 36-year-old said: "Stories like that and witnessing the state people are in after crashes like that, it changes you.

"Unfortunately, as firefighters, we are called to incidents like this all too often. This was one instance that made me want to do something about it.

"The girl was just a teenager, she had recently passed her test when she crashed. I was the casualty carer at the scene and she was in a pretty bad way, so I had to talk to her and make sure she was cared for while the others tried to cut her out.

"She was taken to hospital, but died just three days before Christmas. It was so sad.

"I have been called to others as well. I just kept thinking that if these teens had a bit more experience on the road the crashes might have been avoidable, or at least not as severe."

The firefighter, who has been based in Crawley for the past six years, runs the business, Stay Safe Driving School, when not on duty.

"I was quite affected by that accident, we do have counselling sessions through the fire service, but I wanted things to change," he added.
