A fine of € 350 and impermissibility for driving for two years and a month has been imposed on a UK based swords student caught drink driving through Malahide.

Last week, Robert Towell, Ashdale Close, Kinsealy Court, Kinsealy, appeared before Judge Patrick Brady at Swords District Court.

Towell, who is 20, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence following his arrest last winter.

The defendant had been stopped driving at 3.50am on November 6th, at Malahide Main Street, Garda Derek Murrin told the court.

The court heard Towell was arrested and charged and produced a urine sample which gave a reading of 179mcg of alcohol per 100ml of urine.

Before Judge Brady asked Towell about his status, Garda Murrin added he had no previous convictions.

The accused told the court he was studying business and psychology in Preston University and was not receiving a grant.

Judge Brady warned a fine of up to € 5,000 could be imposed, noting that the reading was not at the 'top level’.

Instead, he fined Towell € 350, gave him three months to pay, order him to pay € 250 in medical bureau expenses and banned him from driving for two years and one month.
