Excess insurance initiative revealed by car hire comparison site

A new campaign aimed at preventing renters getting ripped off by excess insurance charges has been launched by a car hire comparison website.

The intention of the drive is to make sure holidaymakers steer clear of over-priced insurance cover and hefty excess charges, some of which can cost anything up to £2,000, said carrentals.co.uk , the UK’s premier car hire comparison site.

An estimated two million vehicles will be rented by British holidaymakers , this summer. Carrentals has gone on record saying its believes that over 50 per cent of travellers usually feel pressured into having to take out additional excess insurance whenever they pick up their vehicle from a desk located in their destination. The comparison site also claims that many of the policies sold to renters fail to include cover for all the essentials - like damage to the windscreens and tyres, in addition to lost keys.

“The company, in its customer research projects, has found an increasing amount of people complaining about the excess insurance they have to pay. Every year, the key issues always stay the same – customers being sold insurance when they collect their vehicle while sometimes paying twice for cover or paying premiums for taking out cover at the last minute, often not even receiving the correct cover that they really need. We believe this is unacceptable,” said Gareth Robinson, Carrentals.co.uk’s Managing Director.

“As a result, our initiative is going to help explain a lot more about exactly what is and isn’t included in the bogus types of policies that are being offered, giving customers the information needed to plan ahead and guarantee the insurance that’s most suitable for them is obtained while also saving themselves extra money.”
