Road deaths have hit their lowest levels since records began in 1926, show latest records.

This week official figures released by the Department for Transport show that just 1,857 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2010. This represents a drop of 16% on 2009 numbers.

Except for cyclist deaths, which increased by 7% to 111 the overall number of accidents on UK roads also went down across the board. Overall, 22,660 people were killed or seriously injured on UK roads in 2010, an 8% drop on the previous year.

Roads minister Mike Penning welcomed the figures but remained cautious: “This record fall in road deaths is excellent news, but five people still die on the roads every day and improving road safety remains a priority.”
