According to new figures from the IAM, motorists are more likely to stick to the speed limit than a decade ago.
If research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists is to be believed, the proportion of cars breaking the 30mph restriction has dropped from 69% in 1998 to 46% in 2010, .
Since 2003, the number of drivers exceeding 40mph in 30mph zones has also halved to 16%.
All this has played a vital role in the reduction of pedestrian casualties which have plummeted by 40% since 2005 from 671 to 405 a year.
With news of the number of annual road deaths penetrating the sub-2,000 barrier for the first time in recorded history, the IAM’s findings provide further evidence that UK motorists are more safety conscious than ever.
