Motorbike Driving Instructor Comments on Lack of Facilities in Oxford
Posted: 25 January 2011480 Days ago

A motorbike driving instructor has claimed that he may give up on his motorcyle driving school because EU rules and bad weather have combined to prevent learner bikers from taking their test in Oxford.

John Wheeler has been getting people through motorcycle tests for four decades, but recent EU rules have implemented a Europe wide test that has caused his business to run dry. This is partially caused by the enforcement of an emergency stop segment wherein riders must perform a stop at 31.25mph, thus forcing the implementation of specially constructed roads for just this purpose.

None of these has been built in Oxfordshire, meaning that Wheeler can no longer hand out instruction. DSA spokesman Stephen Small said "In the interests of safety, the DSA has decided to temporarily suspend Module 1 testing until work to repair the surface is completed."

Mr Wheeler responded "Ever since the new test was introduced, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of people wishing to take them. Prior to the changes, I was putting up to 80 motorcyclists through the test each year. Now I am getting just 10 or 15. It is all because the Government decided to go along with the 50km per hour rule to the letter."
