Wednesday mornings in June dangerous for cyclists

For cyclists, Wednesday mornings in June are the deadliest time of year. More cyclists are hurt in June (14%) than during any other month of the year, accident data shows.

Wednesday is the most dangerous day of the week for riders when 17% of injuries occur. And than at any other time of day, most cyclists are hurt in the morning (19%), between 7am and 9am.

The findings are part of Surrey County Council's and Surrey Police's Drive SMART campaign which aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and increase road safety. The campaign is urging motorist and cyclists to take better care of each other, particularly as the popularity of cycling in Surrey is set to increase following the news the county will host the Olympic road race and time trial events during the 2012 Games.

The figures also revealed cyclists are most likely to be hurt:

   •  in dry, light conditions (65%)

   •  on urban roads with a 30mph speed limit (66%)
   •  within 1km of their homes (39%)
   •  at junctions (71%)

“It’s likely June is the most dangerous month for cyclists because the warmer weather encourages more people to get on their bikes. Through our Drive SMART campaign we’re trying to persuade all road users to abandon their selfish behaviour and give more thought to each other. I would urge motorists to give cyclists enough time and space and I would ask those people riding a bike to make sure they obey the rules of the road,” said Dr Andrew Povey, Leader of Surrey County Council.

Inspector Chris Colley, Head of Surrey’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Cycling should be fun but it should also be safe. A few safety rules such as being visible to other road users and pedestrians, wearing a helmet and using cycle lanes and advanced stop areas for cycles at traffic lights can help cyclists stay out of trouble on the roads, but they should also be aware of the Highway Code. Drivers need to also be aware of other road users and drive considerately.”
